Doctors: They serve one of the most important role in society. They deliver babies, fix broken bones, and cure cancer. They take care of minor inconveniences like the sniffles and the runs and also save people from the big things like heart attacks and strokes. For all intents and purposes, they're the closest thing this world has to superheroes. But while people will spend millions and break box-office records to watch Spiderman do his thing, most people think what doctor's do is pretty boring. I can't say that I blame them. When you look at the surface, super-strength, x-ray vision, and the ability to fly seem a lot more interesting than prostaglandins, beta blockers, and glomerular filtration rates. Ok, when you look at them any way super powers are cooler than biology and chemistry. But just because the scientific facts aren't compelling drama in themselves, doesn't mean that doctors don't have interesting jobs or see really cool things on a regular basis.

In fact, doctors often have so much going on in the way of drama, suspense, and intrigue that they've been able to integrate into almost every aspect of the entertainment world. Just take a look at this quick sampling of famous physicians. Dr. Jack Shepard leads the cast of Lost through their journey on the island. Dr. Patch Adams kept audiences chuckling along with his patients on the big screen. Drs. McDreamy and McSteamy are constantly driving the womenfolk crazy on Grey's Anatomy. Dr. House can basically solve any mystery known to man. Dr. Dre has been topping the rap charts for years now. Plastic surgeon, Dr. Neil Roberts kept the noopsie's looking young on The OC and also fathered the best character on the show, Summer. And even Mario himself took some time away from battling the Koopas to earn his M.D. degree.

The point of that prestigious list isn't intended to put all doctors on a pedestal. I'm well aware that there are plenty of docs out there who aren't focused on helping patients and are just in it for themselves. Folks like Dr. Doom, Dr. Octopus, Dr. Zaius, Dr. Wily, and of course, Dr. Evil have been giving the profession a bad name for years. But rest assured that those villains are in the extreme minority and don't represent most physicians. The egregious acts of terrorism and crime by a few don't begin to compare to the overwhelming amount of good done by doctors as a whole.

At this point, you might be wondering why I've written all this, so I'll cut to the chase. Basically, in a few months a new doctor will be joining that group of physician entertainers. That person would be me, DeROK M.D. And so I've decided to create a section of this site dedicated to the more interesting side of medicine. No, the whole medical idea doesn't really fit in with the "sports, movies, music, television, and video games"-thing I've got going on. But the point of this site was always to write about my favorite things, and medicine has become a pretty big part of my life. Don't worry, I'll try to do my best to stay away from the overly-scientific stuff and will only include the things that I think the general public will find interesting. And who knows, after visiting this section you might decide to pursue a career as a doctor yourself. Or you might think this is lame and just go back to playing Flash Games. Either one's cool with me. Just remember to leave your co-pay before you exit the site!
