No one could have predicted that when David Stern announced the 5th pick of the 1995 NBA Draft, he was not only ushering in a new era for the Minnesota Timberwolves, but making a declaration that would revolutionize the entire league. At the time, we were all too busy staring in shock at the nervous, lanky teenager that Kevin McHale had just spent his first draft pick acquiring. Now, nearly ten years later, it's impossible to follow the NBA and not see Kevin Garnett's imprint on the game. A quick glance at his list of accomplishments include being the first player drafted out of high school in twenty years, signing what was the largest contract in professional sports, making seven all-star game appearances, and winning the 2004 NBA MVP award. However, to fans of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kevin Garnett means far more than stat sheets could ever describe. Before Kevin Garnett came along, the Wolves were the laughing-stock of the NBA. They had never come remotely close to having a winning record or earning a playoff berth. But after the arrival of Garnett, things changed quickly. For the past eight seasons the Timberwolves have advanced to the post-season, the second longest active streak in the NBA. However, during that time the Wolves suffered through another streak, this one being seven consecutive first round exits. Yet throughout all those frustrating years, Kevin refused to give up. Instead of complaining or quitting, Garnett worked harder and carried the team through difficult times. He remained loyal to the franchise, signing a contract extension and taking a pay cut to help the team add better talent. On April 30th, 2004 Kevin Garnett's seven years of bad luck finally ended. The Timberwolves eliminated the Denver Nuggets 4-1 and advanced to the Western Conference Semi-Finals with their playoff run far from over.
Kevin Garnett has brought long-awaited success to Minnesota. But far more important than his points and rebounds, are the leadership and character that he has displayed throughout the past decade. And it is because of those qualities that Timberwolves fans across the world are thankful that he's a part of this franchise. He has gone beyond exemplifying what it means to be a great player, and has shown us what it means to be a great person. And that's why double-double or double-dribble, first round exit or NBA Finals, Kevin Garnett will always be "Our MVP".
